I had to do it again. Not because I hadn’t finished before. I’d finished twice. But both times I’d run with someone else, and there was a question nagging away at me that I couldn’t quite shake. What is your time? What can you do when you are left to yourself in the mountains? What are you really capable of?

It’s ten to three on a warm afternoon in May and I’m standing behind Florence cathedral leaning over my camera taking a selfie with my fellow companions, Roberto and Salvatore, on this adventure we’re about to embark on. The sky above is a perfect afternoon blue and the runners around me add to the palette with their multitude of coloured shirts.
